Red One Overview

The Red One digital cinema camera was one of the first high-resolution video cameras designed specifically for film production. The Red One kept several conventions of 35MM film production. For instance, the camera's Mysterium 12 megapixel CMOS sensor matches the size of a Super-35 film frame and the PL lens mount allowed the camera to use film lenses. Recording images at 4K resolution at up to 30 FPS, the Red One's images are large enough for theatrical projection. Red developed its own raw camera file format, cheekily named with the file suffix .R3D, which usually needs to be converted to a standard format for dailies and editing. Though a few years old now, Red One cameras are still widely in use and some have been upgraded with Red's newer Mysterium-X sensor.

Red Epic Overview

Red added several interesting features with their second major camera release, the Epic. Based on the new Mysterium-X sensor, the Epic's most anticipated feature is the ability to record 5K resolution images at up to 120 FPS The camera also offers a mode similar to High Dynamic Range photography called HDRx. HDRx allows up to 18 stops of image latitude, vastly increasing the creative options during the color grading process. The Epic is smaller and lighter than the Red One while adding high-end features like a full-function remote and fast on-board SSD storage.
